Olivia Coughtrey

The original photograph was taken while having a pint at the pub. I decided to paint it because I was drawn to the dramatic effect of the light and shadows. As the painting progressed, it evolved into a good representation of his character. I enjoy the juxtaposition of the chaotic movement of the textiles and shadows and his calm melancholic expression. I feel I have captured a moment of thought, just prior to a response in what was most likely a lively conversation. Although I use photographic references, I am more concerned with portraying the essence of the subject than an exact likeness. It’s all about capturing a moment, a feeling, while providing some insight into the persona.

I am a relative newcomer to painting, yet I have been surrounded by fine art all my life. I am the daughter of 2 professional artists who also ran galleries at some point in their careers, and I have multiple siblings who create fine art. I originally studied Fashion Design at St. Lawrence College, and then went on to raise my own large family. Thirty years later, I find myself again fully immersed in artistic endeavors, this time through fine art. I feel I have somehow come full circle. I delve into the many aspects of art, through a variety of mediums and subjects with constant practice and exploration.
